Prescription Changes 2026

The Government has announced that prescription lengths will be extended in future, but the change isn’t in place yet. Right now, the maximum length for most prescriptions is still three months.

The new rules are expected to come into effect in 2026, and there’s work happening behind the scenes to get systems and regulations ready.

When it does come in, for stable long-term conditions, your GP may prescribe medication for up to one year. However, your GP will use their professional judgement to decide the most appropriate prescription length based on your individual health needs and personal circumstances. If closer monitoring is needed, you may be given a shorter prescription with more regular reviews to ensure your treatment is safe and effective.

If you would like to discuss your eligibility for 12 monthly prescriptions, please book an appointment  with your GP.

Please note the following protocols are in place to ensure our clinical team maintain safe repeat prescribing practices:

  • Repeat prescriptions are only available to our registered patients

  • A patient's condition needs to be stable

  • There is at least an annual review to assess for ongoing appropriateness of the medication (please note frequency of reviews may differ depending on the medication you are on)

  • Please note that Antibiotic requests require a face to face consultation. Please call 07 827 7184 to book.

Immunisations at Cambridge Medical Centre

If you are on a controlled drug, prescribing guidelines may differ and you may be required to have a consult with your GP several times a year.

If one of our team asks you to book a consult with a clinician for a medication review, please understand that this is for your safety and to ensure the medications you are on are still appropriate for your condition.

If you are unable to get an appointment for your medication review before running out then your doctor may approve a short-term supply to ensure you have continuity of medication up until your appointment.

We encourage all patients to be aware of when their annual medication review is due and book an appointment in advance.  To book your appointment please phone us on 07 8277184

Our Advanced Nurses are now able to complete medication reviews so please let our team know when you are booking so they can book you with the right person.
